Commonwealth of Nations - Guyana

Guyana is a country in South America located on the northern coast. It borders the Atlantic Ocean, Suriname, Venezuela and Brazil. The capital, Georgetown, is the most populated city. Guyana gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1966, with politics influenced by ethnic affiliations, notably the People's Progressive Party ruling from 1992 to 2015. Guyana is a lowland country with agricultural areas, home to 90% of its population, while its interior features forests, mountains, and savannas.

This country is also a member of the Commonwealth of Nations and it joined in May 26 of 1966, becoming the 24 member. Guyana has participated in every Commonwealth Games since 1930, achieving multiple medals, including gold in athletics and boxing. Notable performances include Aliann Pompey's second place in the Women's 400 metres at the 2010 Games. The Guyana National Olympic Committee was recognized in 1948.

Like most of Britain's former colonies, Cricket is the most popular sport in Guyana, and it is part of the West Indies team in the World Cup. Other sports that are popular include softball, football, rugby, netball, rounders, tennis, basketball, boxing, and squash.
