The Art Gallery of New South Wales
Hello, everyone! Today I'm going to be sharing a few things about the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This art museum is located in The Domain, Sydney, and it is recognized for it's very spacious galleries and artworks from all over the world. But this gallery doesn't just contain works from other countries, it also houses the largest collection of Australian Aboriginal art.
After taking a look to it's wide collection, I've seen some quite interesting art pieces, but if there was one that really left me delighted, it would be Helen Allingham's artwork. The art gallery has three works by this artist, so it is very difficult for me to choose just one to talk about, since they are all ethereal. After thinking for a while, I came to the conclusion that "Gathering Flowers" is the piece that I'm going to share.
"Gathering Flowers" (also known as "Gathering Ferns") is an art piece made by Helen Allingham with the media category of watercolour. The materials used by Helen were watercolour and gum, and she also used the method of scraping out.
When I saw this artwork, the colors drew most of my attention. The vibrant colors of the flowers paired with the green grass makes it look like a real flower field. The drawing overall, is soft and blurry, each brushstroke was made with delicacy, making it look soft and dreamy. The detail that was put in every bush and plant really shows the effort made by Helen, managing to create a calm rural atmosphere. Another great element of the artwork, is the girl who's gathering flowers. Her peaceful expression and her delicate dress gets along well with the environment, creating the beautiful result that we can admire. Another detail I noticed are the red flowers that are all over the scenario. As we know, red is a very attracting colour to our eye, and the fact that these flowers are in a darker tone than other parts of the drawing makes them stand out more, specially the ones in the front.
Honestly, this art piece really resonated with me and thanks to this museum, I could discover one of my new favorite artists from the victorian era.
